Karen Bradley Appointed to lead british delegation of bipa

Former UK Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Rt Hon Karen Bradley MP, has been appointed as Co-Chair of the British-Irish Parliamentary Assembly. She will lead the UK Parliament delegation to the 62nd plenary of the Assembly, to take place in Cavan on 24 and 25 October.

During her 18 months as Secretary of State between January 2018 and July 2019 Conservative MP Karen Bradley helped deliver two City Deals for Northern Ireland, started a talks process which ultimately led to the restoration of the Executive and was involved in negotiations over Brexit. She addressed the 57th BIPA Plenary in London in October 2018. Before her appointment to the Northern Ireland brief the Staffordshire Moorlands MP served as Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, between July 2016 and January 2018.

Karen Bradley replaces Andrew Rosindell MP as the British Co-Chair, and will chair BIPA plenary sessions alongside Irish Co-Chair Brendan Smith TD.

On the appointment, BIPA Co-Chair Karen Bradley said, “I am delighted to have been appointed as Co-Chair of the Assembly. As Secretary of State for Northern Ireland I had first-hand experience of the potential of this Assembly and its members to contribute to greater cooperation and understanding, not just between Britain and Ireland but also across all the political entities on these islands. I very much look forward to jointly chairing the proceedings of the 62nd Plenary in Cavan.”

Mark Menzies MP has also been appointed as a Vice-Chair of the Assembly, in succession to Julie Marson MP.
